DECOLONIZE YOUR MIND
Instrument Creation Workshops
"Instrument Creation Workshops" (ICW's) are meant to give us a hand-on approach to reclaiming cultural and creative autonomy. From PVC pipe flutes to percussion instruments made from nature, ICW's are a great experience for all ages!

All around the world cultures are at risk of losing their artisans, their handcraft, and their stories. So much of our histories are held in these traditions and in losing them, we lose parts of ourselves and the fabric that intertwines us weakens. Therefore, we believe it is vital to share and pass down these traditions from one to the next and in doing so reclaim cultural autonomy and ground ourselves in the legacies of those who came before us. This connection is fundamental to appreciating and understanding our common humanity, the thread which runs through and binds all of us.
Our Instrument Creation Workshops are a way for us to get hands-on with hearing our pasts and playing our futures.
In these workshops we will:
-
develop an artistic and mechanical practice grounded in physical techniques
-
Understand of historical cultural and musical traditions and practices
-
Understand and appreciation of the African diaspora through musicology and oral histories
-
Create and learn about Fulani flute, kalimba, balafon, calabash, etc…
